1.      Locate and label Australia, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Tasmania, Launceston, and Ayers Rock (now know by its Aboriginal name – find out what it is and label it properly.)  Many sites in the world have been given names by the white people who discovered and conquered them, but now many of those places are returning to the names given them by the indigenous peoples.  Define indigenous on your terms page.
2.      Locate and label New Zealand and its capital.  Do its two islands have separate names?  Label them, and the largest city in each.
3.      Let’s locate and label some of the south sea islands: the Cook Islands, the Marquesas (where Jim and Julie sailed), the Solomon Islands, the Fiji Islands, the Samoan Islands, the Philippines, Guam (which is owned by the US) and the Hawaiian Islands.  Since Hawaii is a US state, label each of its islands and Honolulu.

  1. Read summaries of chapter 11 and 12.  Chapter 11   The author’s dangerous voyage.  He arrives at New Holland, hoping to settle there.  Is wounded with an arrow by one of the natives.  Is seized and carried by force into a Portuguese ship.  The great civilities of the captain.  The author arrives at England. Chapter 12  The author’s veracity.  His design in publishing this work.  His censure of those travellers who swerve from the truth.  The author clears himself from any sinister ends in writing.  An objection answered.  The method of planting colonies.  His native country commended.  The right of the crown to those countries described by the author is justified.  The difficulty of conquering them.  The author takes his last leave of the reader; proposes his manner of living for the future; gives good advice, and concludes.
  2. Read chapters 11 and 12.
  3. Writing
    1. Make a poster about one of your themes you took notes on as you read.
    2. Include on your poster three examples from Gulliver’s Travels.
    3. Include any biographical information on the author that would incline him to write about that theme.
    4. Include a title for the poster and explanation of the theme you are doing.
    5. Present your poster. (It should be neat, organized, appealing, easy to read by your audience.)
    6. An alternative is to prepare a power point presentation including the same things.
    7. Today you just have to plan it out. Gather the quotes/examples from the book, research the author. The deadline is Next Monday

2.      Locate and label South Africa, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Cape Town, Pretoria, Mauritius, ZanzibarRhodesia is no longer called Rhodesia – can you find its modern name?  Auntie Anita has been there.
3.      But you’re not done yet!  Africa is quite big, and your book doesn’t tell about all of it.  Let’s locate and label all of the countries of Africa.

  1. Read the summaries of chapter 11 and chapter 1 of part 4:  Chapter 11 The author leaves Luggnagg, and sails to Japan.  From thence he returns in a Dutch ship to Amsterdam, and from Amsterdam to England.Part IV.  A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms.  Chapter 1 The author sets out as captain of a ship.  His men conspire against him, confine him a long time to his cabin, and set him on shore in an unknown land.  He travels up into the country.  The Yahoos, a strange sort of animal, described.  The author meets two Houyhnhnms.
  2. Read chapters 11 and 1 of part 4.  Don’t forget to take notes on your themes, include page numbers in your notes.

  2. Use your writing assignment from day 35 and underline every sentence. Use three different colored pencils and color code your story. Every sentence should be unlined marking it as simple, compound or complex. Assign a color to each type of sentence.  (Choose one of the places Gulliver visits and write about a day you spend there. Use simple, compound and complex sentences. Make sure this gets into your notebook. Hold onto this for next week’s grammar lesson.)
