Reading
- Read Carl Sandburg poems 24-30.
- Poem 30 is talking about the city of Chicago. He is saying, yes, we have problems with evil in our city, but we are still proud this is our city and we are all these great things. The first part of the second paragraph of the poem reminded me of this chapter of the Bible. Why?
- Effluvia in poem 24 means emanation or exhalation, maybe it means like the breath of the mountains. Effluvia is actually plural. Effluviam is the singular.
- Thingamajig in 25 is pronounced thing – a – ma – jig. It’s just a word we use when we don’t know what something is called. What do you think the thingamajig is?
